Kat Wellum-Kent is the Founder of Fractional Finance – a fractional Chief Financial Officer for start-up and scale-up tech firms.
After working with lots of different businesses over her 20+ year career in finance, Kat set up her company to partner with people who have a clear vision of what they want to achieve, and who understand that they need support to get them there.
As a Techies judge, Kat brings a wealth of business experience and that all-important impartiality, to help decide who the worthy winners are.
We asked her a few questions about her business and her role at The Techies.
What do you enjoy about being a Techies judge?
I love being part of the judging team for the Techies. Judging night is one of my favourite nights of the year, almost as good as the awards night itself! The reason I enjoy it so much is because the standard of entries is so high. Each of the judges brings a different perspective so the discussion about who should be the winner is always interesting.
What has stood out to you about this year’s entries?
The thing that always surprises me is that every year a business enters that we’ve never come across before, which just shows that entering the awards is a great way to raise your profile in the local business community.
Can you give us some background on your business?
Fractional Finance is not your typical finance team. After working in finance for more than two decades, I’ve spotted the chink in the armour. Successful businesses need financial teams that sit within a business, supporting owners to drive their vision through actionable, data-driven insight.
It’s no good just giving a business its financial figures and leaving the owner to figure it out. They’re already likely to be wearing many hats, so adding this to their plate isn’t going to help. Fractional Finance offers a bespoke solution to its clients, working with them to make sure their ambitions become a reality.
The business landscape has become increasingly challenging, with many hurdles in the way for business owners, especially those in the start-up and scale-up phases. Fractional Finance not only gives these businesses a clear indication of how they are performing financially but from this, we can support senior leaders with aspects such a salary, remuneration possibilities, technology investment and business acquisitions to ensure they stand head and shoulders above their competitors in an ever-increasingly competitive world.
