Meet Techies Finalist – Cervus Defence

By Anita Jaynes on 29 October, 2021

It’s not long until The Business Exchange hosts its annual technology awards for Swindon and Wiltshire, The Techies, on Thursday 4th November.

Ahead of awards night we spoke to Alan Roan, Managing Director of Cervus Defence who are finalists in four categories, Driven by Data, Future Tech Superstar, Most Innovative Tech Solution and Tech Team of the Year.

Based at Porton Down Science Park in Salisbury, Cervus Defence is a data analytics firm. They have a proud history in providing support to the ‘front line user’ in defence and security organisations around the world.

The business began as ‘three men in sheds’ in 2013 (all military veterans), providing consultancy-based analytics support to experimentation and development of new defence and security capabilities, and grew to its current incarnation, providing direct analytics to international government organisations.

Cervus Defence has seen a growth trajectory in the last 12 months, increasing the team from eight to 13 employees.

How does it feel to be a finalist?

Being nominated in not one, but four categories (Driven by Data, Future Tech Superstar – Edward Knight, Most Innovative Tech Solution and Tech Team of the Year) was a complete shock. Despite Covid, we have been expanding as a business and it is great for the Cervus team to get recognised for their amazing efforts. It is also extremely flattering to be nominated along side some excellent businesses.

What are you planning for awards night?

We are planning to have a remote get together. We had such fun at the last remote awards and because of the ongoing health concerns, we decided it best to have celebratory drinks online. Our online after party has become the industry standard.

What would a Techie Award mean to you and your team?

Like all of the other incredible nominees, we have overcome so much this year. I think we have learned loads, the biggest point being that our people is what provides any business with its resilience. Winning any of these awards would allow me to publicly thank the team and for them to receive recognition for their superhero efforts.

How are you sharing the news with your networks?

We are incredibly proud to have been nominated and are telling anyone who will listen. We are making a big deal of the awards on our social media feeds and our external comms.
