Mike Land, who runs Swindon-based creative agency Nickel Design, is continuing with his pledge to raise over £5,000 this year for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, as he prepares to break a Guinness World Record.
On 10th August at Cotswold Airport – Mike will attempt to break the record for the ‘Farthest Distance Pulling a Vehicle in 24 Hours,’ and in the process raise over £5,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (The original target was £1,500 but Mike is now already nearly at £4,000).
In addition to the van haul, Mike is planning to do other challenges as well, including a skydive in September.
He explained, “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a cause very close to my heart, and they run a fantastic service, funded solely by donations. I got to know them when they invited me in to talk about branding, and I decided I wanted to help. I’ve been a member of Swindon Slinn Allstars Running Club for many years, and they support Wiltshire Air Ambulance too. I’d like to get to at least £5,000 and if every one of my business connections gave just £2, I would easily smash that.”
No stranger to fundraising, Mike has bungee jumped, run marathons and half-marathons, staged a strictly come dancing evening and even abseiled down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, in aid of a number of different charities. He is also a non-exec director of Swindon not-for-profit The Platform Project, which helps bridge the gap between education and employment.

Speaking to TBE, Mike said that the fundraising page will be open for at least a month after the record attempt, and will be kept open for as long as possible. “I might keep it open for the whole year because even though I’m doing different challenges, it’s all going to the same total,” he added.
Naomi Barker, Corporate Partnerships Lead with Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said, “Each year we need to raise £4 million to keep the helicopter flying and continue saving lives. We receive no regular direct Government funding or National Lottery grants, so we have to rely on generous donations from the public and local businesses, such as Nickel Design, to help support our lifesaving work. We’re very excited Mike has chosen to support us. We can’t wait to get involved – I’m sure the van pull is just the beginning!”
Mike has been posting regular updates of his progress on LinkedIn and recently announced that A-Plan Insurance had agreed to pay for his liability insurance.
Also sponsoring Mike are Cotswold Airport, Scarrotts Van & Truck Centre, Aura Signs, Nickel Design, Trakm8 and Secure Safety Solutions.
