Alexander Vinson is just two years old and has Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT), which is a very rare, fast growing tumour of the brain and spinal cord; about half of these tumours begin in the cerebellum or brain stem. Since diagnosis in July this year, within the space of just eight days, Alexander had two brain surgeries of approximately seven hours each to remove 80% of the tumour – the rest is to be treated with chemotherapy and radiation.
However, there is another option. Proton therapy will give Alexander the best possible chance to live a normal, happy life but unfortunately Alexander’s cancer is not on the NHS list for treatment and an appeal for funding was rejected. Proton therapy is not available in the UK so he has to be treated in the United States. This means Alexander and his family will need to spend up to three months away from home.
Wiltshire Wishes approached Alexander’s family to see if there was a wish they could grant, but they said they only need to raise funds, so Wiltshire Wishes agreed to help. As well as a donation from their funds Wiltshire Wishes have organised an event this Sunday 22 November at Dilton Marsh Memorial Hall, the village in which Alexander lives.
Doors open between 11:00 and 14:00 and admission is by donation. Inside there will be a raffle, teddy tombola, face painting, temporary tattoos, Guess the number of sweets, Name the Teddy and a jumble sale stall. Weather permitting there will be a bouncy castle kindly supplied by Elite Leisure. Refreshments of tea, coffee, squash and cakes will be on sale too.
Parking is limited, but please come and support this event, there is parking in the village but please be respectful of the residents.
Wiltshire Wishes would like to say thank you to all those who have donated to the Raffle Prizes so far, and if you would like to provide a prize please get in touch to arrange collection or drop off.
If you have an idea of a stall, that would also be most welcome – the more the merrier!
For any further information please contact Wiltshire Wishes founder, Jenny Couldrake on 07925 325138 or drop donations to 70 Timor Road, Westbury, Wiltshire.
Let’s work together to get this little boy the best chance to live a full and happy life, the clock is ticking and the funds need to be raised by 1 December 2015 via Kids ‘n’ Cancer a registered charity specialising in assisting families needing proton therapy.
