At the start of June Paul Turner, Personal Injury Lawyer at local law firm Goughs Solicitors, decided to embark on a ‘Running 5k per Working Day’ challenge in order to raise money for Julia’s House, The Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospices.
At the beginning of the challenge Paul aimed to improve his fitness level and lose a few pounds, but at the back of his mind he was a little worried about his willpower. “I knew that it would be easy to occasionally duck out of training and find myself back in my usual routine, unless of course there was a good reason to exercise. So I decided I would do something publicly and for charity to help me achieve my goal. The Julia’s House 5K a day run was a perfect combination of the two” said Paul.
The ‘5k per Working Day’ challenge started on June 1 and took place every working day throughout the month (22 days in total). Due to the unexpected heat wave, Paul found his first few runs extremely difficult and unlike everybody else was pleased when the spell of good weather ended with rain and thunder storms!
Paul said that the fundraising part was pretty straightforward: “All I had to do was set up a Just Giving page which was quite simple. I then ‘bombarded’ people with the link through social media and emails.” When Paul reached £150.00 through JustGiving donations, he was contacted by a benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, offering to match donations up to £500.00!
This level of generosity significantly helped boost Paul’s fundraising efforts, as people knew their donations would in effect be doubled. After 22 gruelling 5km runs Paul’s epic adventure was complete and he had raised a massive £1500.00 in total for Julia’s House.
Every year Goughs considers a number of extremely worthwhile local charities as their nominated charity of the year and this year Julia’s House was chosen because of the life-changing support the charity offers to children and their families. Julia’s House is a children’s hospice dedicated to helping life-limited children and their families across Wiltshire and Dorset. They aim to open a new hospice in Devizes in Autumn 2017.
