Chartered building surveyor Jerry Thornton is taking part in next month’s London marathon to raise money for the charity Whizz-Kidz.
Jerry who will be 62 years old the day before the marathon, has been a chartered building surveyor practising in Swindon for over 30 years. He is taking on the challenge with his wife Julia and they have both been training for months.
Jerry, who lives in Old Town said: “We must be mad to be running this event again after last year. But this charity, which has helped one of our grandchildren does amazing work and deserves every penny as they assist families who find day to day life challenging; families who can often be hidden within communities across the UK.”
Jerry and Julia hope to raise at least £4,000 for Whizz-Kidz, which provides equipment, support and life skills to help children and young people reach their full potential. Since 1990, it has helped more than 18,000 but typically has about 500 on its waiting list.
“I know personally how important Whizz-Kidz has been to my family. Equipment such as a bespoke wheel chair is difficult to get on the NHS, for example, and the waiting list can be up to two years. Yet such a piece of equipment can give a child so much more independence and help them to live a more fulfilled life.”
Jerry is well known in the Swindon business community. He’s the founder of Thornton Associates based in Old Town and is well respected for his knowledge and experience in the property and construction sector. He a founding member of BusinessWise, one of Swindon’s leading business referral groups. This is the second time he’s run the London Marathonwith his wife. Last year they raised £6,000 for another charity.
