South West financial adviser celebrates top-rated listing

By Nick Batten on 9 April, 2021

Local financial adviser Jonathan Knee recently learned that he had qualified for the ‘2021 Guide to Top Rated Financial Advisers’ which is due to be distributed by The Times this Saturday 10th April.

Despite living and working in Bath for McKenzie & Co. Financial Consultants, Jonathan also has strong links to Wiltshire, where he was born in Trowbridge and brought up in Bradford-on-Avon. He is the great, great-grandson of Henry John Knee who founded the well-known Wiltshire retail business, H.J. Knee Ltd, and – up until last year – was a governor at his former school, St. Augustine’s in Trowbridge.

After working in finance in London for a number of years he eventually returned to the West Country in 2008 to become the director of the family business before going back to finance in 2017.

We caught up with Jonathan to find out more about the listing and what he thinks the future holds for the financial sector during these challenging times…

Congratulations on your listing. How did you go about being nominated?

I invited my clients and contacts to comment and rate my services and their experience of working with me via my public profile on

What does this listing mean to you?

Nothing matters to me more than my client outcomes, which might be in the short, medium or long term. The relationships I have with my clients give me a huge amount of pride and happiness. I’m there for them during all the very happy times and also the sad times, it is an incredibly rewarding responsibility. Plus, the reviews are independently verified, so they are not edited or added to in any way.

How has business been during the pandemic?

It’s certainly been different! Overall, my business has grown, I think this is in part due to the time that people have had to really think about their financial objectives. I think being at home all day with your family has helped, depending on your experience of course!

I spent a lot of time during ‘lockdown one’ contacting my existing clients, checking they were okay and reassuring them as much as I could. A number of my clients are business owners and have had to cope with so much disruption over the past 12 months.

How do you think Covid-19 will change things for the finance sector?

I feel it has changed our industry forever, we will keep monitoring and dealing with the challenges in front of us and ensuring that any change is for the better as much as possible. The way I work now is very different to a year ago, video and voice calls make up my working day now. I haven’t had any client events such as Tax briefings at SS Great Britain or our beloved hospitality box at Bath Rugby! Just being in the same room as clients will be fantastic, I can’t wait to be face to face with them again.

On a positive note, we are definitely heading in the right direction. The pandemic numbers are reducing as expected and the vaccine rollout continues to go well. Let’s get the country opening up in the right way and bring back all of those civil liberties that we may have taken for granted before Covid-19.

Lastly, I would encourage all your readers to contact me if they would like to discuss their own personal or business financial planning concerns – and to shop locally, preferably at Knees Home & Electrical in Trowbridge and Malmesbury!
