Climate change might be a bit of a contentious topic, but there’s no denying the evidence. Human beings have, and are still having, a massive impact on the world around us, and we are doing a lot of damage with our presence. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Businesses of all sizes around the UK are committing to doing their bit to cut carbon emissions and protect the planet – and the SME Climate Hub is at the helm of the effort. The management team at Purple Lime are very proud to have joined the SME Climate Hub and made a commitment to becoming even greener accountants – and today we wanted to share a bit about what that means for us, for you, and for the planet.

What is green accountancy?

The term ‘green accountancy’ actually has nothing to do with accountancy. Not really. It’s about the attitude of an accounting firm towards the world we live in, and the commitment to create a greener, more eco-friendly business model for now and for the future. It’s about making little changes (and big ones too) to the way we work, and to the way our industry works, to ensure we are having as little impact on the planet as possible. So, while some of the things we commit to do as part of our journey to green accountancy might relate to our services as accountants, most of them are about the way we run our business – and how we think as we move forward.

What is the SME Climate Hub?

The SME climate Hub is fairly new – it was launched in September 2020 with the aim of bringing together small and medium sized businesses to do their part to cut carbon emissions and fight climate change. The ultimate goal is to help the country meet a target of net carbon zero by 2050, halving emissions by 2030, and the hub calls on all SMEs to get on board and do their part. The hub is recognised by the United Nations Race to Zero campaign, and have joined governments, businesses and other organisations who share in that same goal.

At Purple Lime, we’re proud to be part of the SME Climate Hub. Joining has given us access to the resources we need to build a thorough and robust environmental policy, as well as tools we can use to implement those changes. We see it as an extension of our existing approach to business – putting our clients and their world at the heart of ours.

Our commitments to the environment

At Purple Lime we know that even the smallest change can have a huge positive impact on the environment. That’s why as well as creating a strong environmental policy for our business, we have committed to reducing our carbon footprint across the board. Some of our commitments to creating a greener accountancy firm include:

  • Continuously assessing which data platforms we use and where our data is being held, so that we can hold those data centres to account for their environmental policies.
  • Keeping up our ‘cycle to work’ scheme for all employees.
  • Remaining paperless and encouraging our clients to do the same.
  • Switching out all lightbulbs on business premises to more energy efficient bulbs.
  • Implementing water saving measures.
  • Updating our old computer equipment and recycling redundant equipment.
  • Taking measures to make our offices as energy efficient as possible.
  • Implementing a company-wide recycling policy.
  • Avoiding single-use plastics.
  • Reducing travel emissions by holding meetings online where possible.
  • Encouraging our staff to buy electric vehicles and using existing charging points at our offices.
  • Planting more trees through our work with our partner charity, Protect Earth.

And that’s just a few to start off with. Membership to the SME Climate Hub means we now have access to a range of knowledge and tools that we didn’t before, and we can create new, robust environmental policies that benefit everyone, and the planet we all live on.

At Purple Lime we are very proud to be a proactive and eco-friendly firm. Before joining the SME Climate Hub we had already started our journey towards being green, with our paperless policy and ‘cycle to work’ scheme being particularly successful. With the access, network and support of the SME Climate Hub behind us, we are confident we can not only lessen our own impact on the world, but lead the charge for change in our industry, so that accountancy in general becomes a completely environmentally friendly sector.
