Oxford Brookes Racing will display the fastest car it has ever engineered at UTC Swindon’s open day on Saturday 26 September 2015.
Taking place from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, the event is an opportunity for potential students to meet pioneering employers such as BMW and Network Rail.
On the stand with Oxford Brookes Racing’s specifically engineered monocoque chassis concept racing car will be the Oxford Brookes University Formula Student Team. Visitors can sit in the car and quiz the team about the engineering behind it. Oxford Brookes Racing challenges university students to design, build, develop, market and compete as a team with their own single seater racing car.
The racing car on display at UTC Swindon successfully took part in three races this summer, competing at Silverstone as well as circuits in Germany and Hungary.
Angela Barker-Dench, Principal of UTC Swindon, said: “Our open days are an opportunity for prospective students to see what exciting things can be achieved with a UTC Swindon education. Having Oxford Brookes Racing here will be fantastic. The team’s passion for engineering is infectious – and the car is sure to inspire Swindon’s budding engineers.”
Also at the UTC Swindon open day will be German car maker, BMW, IET, the professional society for the engineering and technology community, Network Rail, the authority responsible for the UK’s railway network, and communications and IT specialist, Excalibur.
Stars from Swindon Wildcats will greet visitors arriving at the event from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm as part of the college’s renewed sponsorship of the English Premier Ice Hockey League team.
Angela continued: “Businesses attending the UTC Swindon open day will discuss careers in engineering with prospective students and their parents. These are the sort of employers we want our students to be targeting when they leave UTC Swindon or higher education.”
Paul Inman, Chair of Governors at UTC Swindon and Pro Vice Chancellor at Oxford Brookes University, commented: “I am delighted that staff and students from our phenomenally successful Oxford Brookes Racing team will be on hand at UTC Swindon’s Open Day on Saturday. Oxford Brookes University’s Formula Student Team is amongst the best in Europe. I have no doubt that having the opportunity to speak with them at the UTC Swindon Open Day will create an even greater buzz about joining this unique educational facility.”
The open day will allow potential students to take a guided tour around UTC Swindon’s £10 million state-of-the-art Bristol Street site. On the tour, they’ll see light-filled workshops and classrooms that reflect the workplace, the college’s lecture theatre and a hub area where students can generate ideas, socialise and inspire others.
UTC Swindon will also host open days on:
- Saturday 16 January 2016
- Saturday 16 April 2016
- Saturday 25 June 2016
Open since September 2014, UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19. The college provides GCSE and A levels, BTEC qualifications in Engineering and IT are available for young people to study alongside both GCCE’s and A levels. Students in UTC Swindon’s 6th form can obtain the equivalent of 5 A levels which are accepted by universities. At the open day, UTC Swindon will be accepting applications for the 2016/17 academic year, as well as for both years 10 and 12.
As part of the original Great Western Rail works, the UTC Swindon site creates a link between the engineering history and the engineering and computing future of the local area, with the Old School Building and the iconic Water Tower featuring prominently. Both structures, which are Grade II listed, were treated sympathetically, with the Water Tower being restored and brought back into educational use.
UTC Swindon is run by a trust sponsored by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University. There are over 90 different industry partners involved with the University Technical College.
