TBE Show – Meet the presenters | Fiona Scott

By Nick Batten on 6 September, 2024

The TBE Show will be a chance for our community of followers across Bath & Somerset and Swindon & Wiltshire to showcase what they do, connect with new people and learn new things to nurture business expansion.

The day’s theme is Going for Growth and we’ll be kicking off with a networking breakfast and panel session discussing how to go for growth NOW. This will be followed by a variety of seminars and workshops.

With the event due to take place next week (12th September), we spoke to some of the seminar leaders to find out what businesses can expect to gain from attending their sessions.

Today we hear from Fiona Scott of Swindon-based media relations firm Scott Media.

Fiona tells us more about her seminar: Media Relations in the Modern World with Scott Media – Why working with the media is still relevant for business growth.

Can you provide an overview of what your seminar will include?

It will encourage attendees to re-evaluate their perception of the media and what makes up the media today. I will talk about the value of the media and how to use coverage to grow your reach and impact.

How have media relations changed in the digital age?

Beyond recognition – more emphasis on news online, the emergence of backlinks, new payment models for media outlets to grow and thrive and of course the influencers!

What types of businesses would benefit most from effective media relations, and why?

Any business, but essentially businesses with a purpose and mission around issues like caring for staff, creating an ethical and forward-thinking team, sustainability, helping others, community focus and where social impact is important. Business owners who focus solely on transactions and profit won’t ‘get’ it because they cannot immediately define the ROI.

Can you share a success story of a local business that significantly benefited from improved media relations?

Many – some examples of companies I’ve worked with which truly embrace the power of media relations – locally Haines Watts Swindon, London-based Creative Nature and Wiltshire-based Royal Wootton Bassett Auctions – all my clients!

Will the seminar provide actionable takeaways people can expect to gain from attending?

I always look to provide tips and information where action can be taken straightaway – but PR is never a sprint, it’s always a marathon even if you are working with a PR partner. It should simply be more effective with a strong and honest PR partner who tells you the truth and does not push you into the game of ‘smoke & mirrors’.

Will the seminar cover the support available to those who want to take a ‘DIY’ approach to PR?

Yes. Anyone can do their own PR – it’s perfectly okay to do this and many start-ups have no choice. However, it’s time-consuming and it may take much, much longer to be more visible.
