TBE Awards – Meet the judges | Kate Westbrook

By Ben Carey on 12 August, 2024

In the run-up to the inaugural TBE Awards this October, we’re profiling our expert panel of judges.

Kate Westbrook is a Partner at Thrings Solicitors and heads up the firm’s commercial team. Through this role, Kate supports businesses of all sizes with their commercial contract needs. Thrings are also the headline sponsor for this year’s awards.

Outside of work, you’re most likely to find Kate swimming in a lake!

Why did you agree to be a judge on the panel? How will your professional experience help you?

I actively lobbied Anita to allow me to be a judge! There is huge power in recognising and celebrating excellence in our business community. In my role at Thrings, I come across so many fantastic businesses, across a diverse range of sectors, and I love being part of a process that helps them amplify the great work they’re doing.

I’ve been a Techies judge for the past four years which has taught me a lot about the judging process – particularly the strength of being part of a judging panel that meets to discuss the applications. That collaboration is a vital part of the process.

I’m analytical by profession so I think I’m pretty good at assessing the strengths and weaknesses of an application – as long as the applicant is backing up what they’ve said!

Why are these regional awards important for the business community? Why would you encourage businesses to enter?

TBE Awards will highlight the incredible talent, innovation and resilience within our local business community. They provide a platform for businesses to showcase their achievements, gain recognition and build their reputation both locally and beyond.

By entering the awards, businesses not only stand a chance to be celebrated for their hard work but also benefit from the networking opportunities and increased visibility that come with participation. It’s an excellent way for businesses to benchmark their performance against peers, receive valuable feedback, and inspire others.

What are you hoping to see from the Award entrants? Are there any specific criteria you will be looking out for?

As a panel of judges, we pay attention to the published criteria for each award category, so we like to see applications which speak to this. As a judge, and perhaps because I’m a lawyer, I want to see evidence of what the entrants have said. We love testimonials, short videos, evidence of growth by way of specific turnover or profit figures and detail presented in an easy-to-review format is great! Don’t just tell us – show us!

Thrings are sponsoring the Flying the Flag for the South West Award – what does this category mean to you?

The Flying the Flag for the South West Award holds a special significance for Thrings. We’re incredibly proud of our region and the businesses within it and we love it when a South West business achieves national or even global recognition. At Thrings, we are passionate about supporting and promoting the success of our local businesses, and this award perfectly aligns with our values.

What are your thoughts in general on the business community brought together by The Business Exchange?

Honestly, it’s the reason we are here. The Business Exchange community is a vibrant, dynamic, and supportive network that fosters collaboration, innovation and growth. The Business Exchange plays a vital role in connecting businesses, providing valuable insights and facilitating opportunities for growth and development.

On a personal level, I really value the strong connections I’ve made through TBE’s community and they’re part of what makes my day-to-day so enjoyable!
