Broome Manor has awarded a lifetime honorary membership to Barry Sandry in recognition of his 36 years of service. Barry joined Broome Manor in 1976 when the course first opened as Head PGA Professional and not only guided many young golfers to become PGA professionals, but also coached many top golfers including double Ryder Cup winner David Howell.
In 1977 Barry was instrumental in setting up Broome Manor Golf Club so that regular players could obtain an official EGU handicap to enable them to play in competitions. Over the years Barry played a key role in the development of Broome Manor, in the late 70’s and early 80’s he helped redesign the layout of the original course to expand it from 18 holes to 27. He started the Broome Manor Junior Golf Academy offering regular weekly coaching for junior girls and boys some of who including David Howell, Gary Harris, Vicky Hanks and Debbie Watt went on to represent their country at international level. Barry was awarded the Golf Foundation Sinclair award in 2006 in recognition of his work in the development of junior golf.
Barry was also a successful European senior tour player winning the Wiltshire Professional Golf Championship six times and also the Wiltshire Professional Match play Championship.
The PGA Regional Captain’s Charity Pro-Am will be held at Broome Manor or Tuesday 2nd June 2015 in aid of The Wiltshire Air Ambulance Service and The PGA Benevolent Fund which Barry, as Captain, will host.
Barry said “It is a great privilege to be given a lifetime honorary membership of Broome Manor by Jeremy Sturgess of Twigmarket Ltd and also to be selected as Captain of the PGA in England and Wales (South West) for 2015, and I am thoroughly looking forward to an exciting and busy year.”
The lease to run Broome Manor Golf Complex and Highworth Golf Course was transferred from Swindon Borough Council to Twigmarket on 1 November 2014.
