Swindon-based Wasdell Packaging has acquired pharmaceutical production and clinical trial facilities in the North East from Shire Pharmaceuticals.

The 26,360 sq ft purpose-built factory at Newburn, near Newcastle upon Tyne, comprises office, manufacturing, packaging and storage space.  This will enable Wasdell to extend their pharmaceutical services into both liquid and cream manufacturing as well as clinical trials, covering areas such as process and formulation development, aseptic and non-aseptic processing and packaging of highly potent products.  The Newburn factory is licensed for pharma manufacturing and controlled drugs.

Wasdell has extensive pharmaceutical packaging, production and distribution facilities at Blagrove, Swindon and plans to extend these facilities by 2019.  The company acquired Qualiti (Burnley) Limited in July 2014.  The purchase of the new factory at Newburn is part of its business strategy to develop its services through diversification into pharmaceutical manufacturing and clinical trials.  Wasdell will be employing the factory’s existing multi-skilled and highly-qualified workforce.

CEO, Martin Tedham, said: “This is a very exciting step for Wasdell, taking us into new areas that will help our business grow.  The Newburn factory has plenty of room for expansion and we are looking forward to being able to extend the range of services we provide to both new and existing customers.”
