Prospect Hospice, the Wroughton-based charity which provides palliative care to people in Swindon and North Wiltshire, is celebrating 15 years of their lottery this year.
Founded over 32 years ago, the hospice provides high quality care, free of charge, to people facing the end of life. Last year it cared for nearly 2,000 patients and their families, offering its services at the 15-bed hospice in Wroughton, at a ward at the GWH and through a team of community nurse specialists caring for people in their own homes. The range of services not only covers the immediate medical care of patients, but also additional and vital services for longer term patients, including various complementary and occupational therapies, a day hospice, and services to support families through what may be, for many, the most difficult time of their lives.
Whilst all of these services are free of charge, the hospice costs over £5.8 million to run, less than 30% of which is funded by the government. The lottery was set up as just one of the ways that the hospice raises funds, meaning that patients facing the end of their lives do not have the additional burden of having to find money to pay for their care.
For just £1 per week, the lottery offers 28 chances to win a cash prize every week, including the top prize of £1,000. As part of the celebrations, fundraisers at the charity are asking businesses in the area to help make this year the best ever, by either helping to promote the lottery to staff, or by offering staff the chance to take part through their payroll.
Fundraiser Sarah Bedry said: “Many people already take part in our lottery through our payroll, and we’re really grateful for their continued support. But there’s still a lot we can do, especially in this 15th year, to get local businesses on board in what is a really easy way to support our care. If anyone’s interested in setting up payroll giving in their firm, we’d love to hear from you. And you never know – it might just be a member of your staff who wins the £1,000!”
