Nexus in line for best commercial refurbishment award

Nexus Business Centre has been shortlisted for the title of the region’s best commercial building refurbishment.

Swindon Borough Council nominated Nexus in the Local Authority Building Control – Building Excellence awards, or LABC Building Excellence awards, which recognise technical excellence in work undertaken, innovation, sustainability, partnership working and problem solving.

Maria Basson, operations director for Nexus, said: “When the refurbishment reached its most complex phase the Nexus project team consulted with the borough’s building control team.

“Our joint aim was to create a ‘partnership’ between us and the building control team in order to ensure that the work was not only up to the high standard that we expected but also that the borough was involved from an early stage.

“By taking this joined-up partnership approach the end result is a high quality completed project.”

Jim Bishop, principal building control surveyor for Swindon Borough Council, said: “The Nexus building had faced an uncertain future, however thanks to its regeneration it is now an expanding business community.

“The way that Nexus worked with the building control team meant that any problems were solved in a very pragmatic way and it was completed on schedule.  It’s a great example for other similar projects to follow.”

Maria added: “Working with the borough’s building control team has really given us the confidence that the work has been completed in line with regulations and to a high standard.  People are impressed with the high level finish and feel of the centre when they visit, which is what successful businesses are looking for in their premises – as well as the flexibility to grow within the centre.

“We’re very proud that Jim regards the project in such high esteem, and delighted that Nexus are now finalists in an award as prestigious as the Local LABC Building Excellence awards.”

Nexus is up against other commercial development projects from across the West of England region, including Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and parts of Somerset.  The awards ceremony, where Nexus will find out if they have won the title, will be held on 20 June in Bristol.
