Seamstress Clare Boldon has taken her talents to new level by opening a shop – DanceWear – in her home town of Chippenham.
Clare, aged 42, is well known in Wiltshire for her beautifully crafted bespoke tutus and dance costumes made for dancing schools in and around the town. She’s now taken the step of opening up her first shop at 11b New Road, Chippenham.
She said: “We’re stocking everything from leotards, cropped tops and hoodies, to ballet, tap and latin shoes. We can also announce we are the exclusive local stockist for Pineapple, Bloch and Mirella fashion wear – as often girls like to wear something pretty to class, as well as their basic dance uniforms.”
Clare is also a trained shoe fitter as it’s notoriously difficult to get shoes which fit well for dance.
At DanceWear, students will be able to try before buying. The team are also offering consultations with any organisation involved with dance which may want to discuss larger orders of basic dance uniforms or clothing for gymnastics and musical theatre productions in schools or colleges.
With a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering, Clare worked for many years for a waste management company in London before moving to Lacock.
Eight years ago, when her four-year-old daughter, Charlotte, announced she wanted to be a dancer, Clare began to combine her structural engineering skills with creative design to make her child dance costumes. Other parents were so impressed they started to ask Clare to do the same for their children.
Since then Clare has provided fabulous tutus and costumes for hundreds of customers nationwide.
Clare said: “We will continue transforming people’s ideas into costumes – as well as altering existing ones – but now customers can visit in a beautiful environment instead of a small room! Orders are being accepted from February 2017 onwards.”
She also explained the spur to expand the business came when her daughter was accepted as one of only ten dance pupils nationwide at the Tring School for the Performing Arts.
Clare said: “Charlotte is doing so well – she performed with the English National Ballet in The Nutcracker last winter – but since she is away from home during term time, my family and friends encouraged me to go ahead with the shop.”
