Nationwide Building Society – which is headquartered in Swindon – is celebrating 50 years this month since it rebranded from the Co-operative Permanent Building Society in 1970.
At the time of the rebrand, the average house price was £4,452 and Nationwide had one million members. Since then it has grown to serve over 15 million members across the UK.
The company is now the world’s largest building society as well as one of the largest savings providers and a top-three provider of mortgages in the UK. It is also a major provider of current accounts, credit cards, ISAs and personal loans.
Sara Kinsey, Head of Historical Archives at Nationwide Building Society said, “As a building society we have been serving our members for generations – and this month we celebrate 50 years since we changed our name to Nationwide.
“The world has changed immensely since then but, despite those changes, we continue to do our best to support local communities right across the country, including here in Swindon.”
The Society now has around 18,000 employees, 12,211 of which are based in Swindon.
