By Ben Carey on 1 May, 2018

To celebrate the finalists in our inaugural Techies Awards 2018, we are running a series of profiles on the tech firms that caught our judges eye.

Here we put the spotlight on Excalibur, finalist in the Best Tech Support Service category.

Company: Excalibur Communications

Located: Swindon, Wiltshire

Number of Employees: 60

Turnover: £9M

Excalibur Communications has evolved over the past three decades to become one of the leading IT and business communications providers to more than 4,000 businesses ranging from SMEs to Premiership Football Clubs.

Originally established as the Mobile Phone Centre in 1992, the company became Excalibur Communications in 2000 and since then has continued to develop its offering to include B2B support, acquiring several companies to broaden its customer base and enhance the quality and range of the services it provides.

Today the company’s core business is based around IT services, fixed and connectivity solutions, telephone systems and mobile devices, providing a range of support services to ensure their clients have everything they need to efficiently and safely communicate internally and externally.

Excalibur prides itself on offering the highest level of service, backed up with Service Level Agreement (SLA) management and reporting. In addition the company strives to ensure it is responsive, reliable, knowledgeable and, above all, personable.

Seeing customers as the most important part of its business, Excalibur works closely with them to ensure they have the best products and services available, creating solutions to fit specific requirements regardless of the size of the business.

In addition to looking after its customers, Excalibur is also keen to retain its staff and expertise. In 2017 and again in 2018, the company made the Sunday Times Top 100 list of best small companies to work for. In 2016 it became one of the first organisations in Swindon to implement the minimum living wage standard and also hold the Investors in People accreditation.

Excalibur undertakes a number of initiatives to make it a great employer, focusing on key areas including office environment, investing in people, staff benefits and incentives.

Ongoing personal development is a priority and is achieved through mentoring, training and internal promotion.  The company operates an 18 month Excalibur Business School programme. Delivered by an external associate, staff can build their own skills base in areas such as sales, finance and providing excellence in service.

Excalibur believes its partners should be properly rewarded for success and hard work. As part of its growth plan, Excalibur has devised an extraordinary £1million bonus incentive scheme for the company. This money will be shared equally between all the partners.

“I am delighted the team have been nominated as finalists. The team has developed and evolved whilst the business has grown over the past 5 years, continuing to deliver a consistent level of service to our customers. Sometimes in service, recognition is rarely given and therefore the entire team should look back on their achievements and take an enormous amount of pride in the excellent customer service they have delivered as a team in recent years.” Graham Ford, Operations Director, Excalibur Communications.
