Goughs Solicitors is the sponsor of our Chippenham Love Local campaign (1st-7th August). Goughs provide expert legal services for you, your business and your family. They have offices throughout Wiltshire with two bases in Chippenham, one on New Road in the centre of the town and the other on Greenways Business Park. The Greenways office opened earlier this year becoming the firm’s 7th office.
Goughs have been a prominent feature of the Wiltshire high streets for over 100 years, with the first office opening in Calne in 1882.
Gemma Sumsion is Equity Partner and Head of Commercial and is based at the firm’s Greenways Business Park office. We met Gemma to find out more about what she does and why she loves working in Chippenham.
Why is having a local presence in Chippenham important to Goughs?
We pride ourselves on building lasting relationships with our clients and it is really important to them that we’re visibly present and easily accessible. Due to the success of our Chippenham High Street office, we opened our second office in Chippenham in February of this year.
What’s great about being part of the local business community?
We are lucky to have such varied links to so many businesses. We thrive on working closely with our clients’ other professional advisers such as accountants, tax advisers, land agents, planners, other lawyers, banks, architects and more, and always look to promote and recommend those that we think will fit well with our clients’ business, brand and personality. We focus on building long lasting true relationships with people that match our values, those of our clients and that we can also have a bit of fun with!
What do you love about working in Chippenham?
The diverse business community, connections to the wider south west with having the motorway links and train line on our doorstep and the future growth potential of the town. Also having such a modern and open plan office, the team can all work together in a more collaborative and effective environment. Opening the Greenways Business Park office has really given the team the opportunity to thrive.
Tell us more about your specialisms
My specialisms are, commercial property (sales, purchases, landlord and tenant work), property and corporate financings, employment, dispute resolution, commercial and corporate (commercial contracts, partnership and shareholder agreements and set up, mergers and acquisitions), real estate land and development (acting for private house builders, land developers and landowners in all aspects of land development).
How did Goughs adapt to lockdown?
We have been pleased to have remained fully operational throughout the pandemic offering face to face meetings with our clients through Zoom and Facetime. We also initiated a ‘Wills Through a Window’ service, to ensure documents that needed to be signed in front of a witness could still be done, whilst maintaining a safe distance outside their property.
We have also been offering free updates and advice on furlough leave among others areas of employment law.
As we have started to return to the offices in the past few weeks, we are now pleased to welcome clients in, having introduced many safety precautions such as screens on all reception desks.
What are your plans for the rest of 2020?
To continue to be an extension to our clients’ businesses, always being there to assist and help. I would also like to continue growing our thriving team at Greenways Business Park.
What is your message to the business community?
Keep talking, keep in touch as there are lots of options available to help and assist the survival of businesses as well as the opportunities for business to really grasp opportunities to thrive and grow during these times.
