Made in Wiltshire: Expansion for Ball Aerocan

By Anita Jaynes on 4 May, 2015

Ball Aerocan produce aerosol cans and aluminium bottles for the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries.

Based in Devizes since 1984 the firm currently employs 121 staff and operates 24/7 365 days a year. The plant is part of a larger group with over 50 years experience in the industry and has three plants located across Europe. The group is owned by Ball Corporation, an American firm and has been part of the organisation since 2011.

TBE visited the Ball Aerocan factory in Devizes to meet with plant manager Warren Berry to find out more about the company, its success and plans for the future.

Warren joined the business just over ten months ago and his role is instrumental in the impending growth of the firm.

How many aerosol cans does the Devizes factory produce each day?

Over a half a million cans which are shipped all over the world. Unilever is one of the biggest brands we manufacture for, but we produce for lots of customers in countries all over the world.

How long does it take to make a can?

It takes 67 minutes to produce a can from a raw slug to a finished can ready to be wrapped up and put in the warehouse.

Being such a large manufacturer locally how green are you?

Ball Aerocan in Devizes is an official zero to landfill site. We recycle everything and we’re very environmentally aware as an organisation.

How is Ball Aerocan looking to expand locally?

We have a very aggressive growth plan as the aerosol market is growing year on year. We have a high-speed production line being introduced in quarter four, producing 200 cans a minute. This will increase our head count and we are currently looking to recruit 25 to 30 new employees with a range of skill sets from mechanical skills to printing, logistics and warehousing. We are also investing in the future of Wiltshire by including apprenticeships in mechanical and electrical engineering and printing.

Devizes is not an easy place to recruit, but we are a solid, dependable business to work for and I would encourage people to let us know if they want to work with us.

This growth is evidence of our market strength and international presence. In line with our growth plans globally a new plant is being opened in India soon too.

How does Ball Aerocan engage with the local community?

Since joining the firm I have challenged conventions and got more involved with the local community. We have recently formed a relationship with Wiltshire Air Ambulance. They’re our dedicated charity for 2015 and we’re raising funds for them through a range of activities from charity walks to bike rides.

As a business with a global footprint, supporting smaller companies is fantastic for the local community. We are always keen to invest in local businesses creating sustainable relationships that further support the Wiltshire community and the great people in the area.
