Love Local Old Town – Day 1

By Anita Jaynes on 8 August, 2020

For the next week (Saturday 8th August – Friday 14th August) we’re celebrating Swindon’s Old Town, as part of our 15 week #LoveLocalWilts campaign.

Thanks to our sponsor The National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) we will be putting the spotlight on some of the town’s amazing independent businesses.

Swindon’s Old Town is quite distinct from the current town centre and represented the centre of the economic activity prior to the railways in the mid 1800s. It is historically linked to the Goddard family who were very much associated with this area of Swindon during the 17th Century. It was then a market town with wealth coming from the agricultural trades and it is known for its honeycomb of underground tunnels and cellars. Today it’s a thriving satellite centre with independent shops and businesses and also home to the town’s museum and art gallery.

Today we’re putting the spotlight on Old Town’s bottle shop, Magnum Wine. Based on Wood Street, Magnum stocks an unrivalled selection of wine, champagne and beer from all over the world. It also offers over 100 different malt whiskies and over 20 types of vintage port.

If you’re a gin connoisseur it’s the place to go, with over 200 variations of gin forming Magnum’s famous gin wall, and a much-admired flavoured gin trolley which offers a more contemporary twist.

Magnum Wine, 22 Wood Street, Old Town, Swindon is open 10am-5pm Tuesday – Saturday. Visit the website at:

Love Local Old Town, Swindon is part of The Business Exchange’s Love Local Wiltshire campaign (#LoveLocalWilts).
