Keeping positive through Lockdown 3.0 – Visually Explained

By Ben Carey on 22 February, 2021

With the end of Lockdown 3.0 seemingly within grasp, it’s important to remain positive as we head towards the light at the end of the tunnel.

Since the start of 2021 we have enjoyed receiving and reading your thoughts on coping strategies, positive thinking and aspirations for the year, sharing your valuable insights with the business community across the region.

Yola O’Hara, Founder and Director of social media agency Visually Explained talks about canine companionship, the importance of long walks and being kind to yourself.

How are you keeping positive through Lockdown 3.0?

During Lockdown 3.0 it has been a little harder to keep positive, mainly because of the time of the year with short, grey days and long dark nights.

Every day I look around, and in my mind I make a quick list of things I’m grateful for. I use my spare time for keeping fit and going for long walks (even if it’s raining) just to remind myself that nature doesn’t care about the lockdown and so neither should I feel restricted by it. This helps me feel free.

How are you structuring your day? Have you changed your habits?

I’m lucky, the office building I’m in is still open. We have full-on social distancing rules, but I can come to the office every day. There are not as many of us here as normal but enough to have a quick chat and a laugh.

Are you doing anything new?

I have discovered that I prefer long walks to running, so this is a definite change for me. Having a dog in the house always makes a massive difference; the ever-happy companion demanding yet another special treat always brings a smile.

Are you sticking to your New Year resolutions?

I don’t do New Year resolutions. Never did. I see no point in them as I always forget what they are anyway when I get distracted by everyday life.

Have you introduced any new rituals?

No, I stick to my old routine, but I have to admit I do like online schooling. I’m lucky my kids are old enough to be self-sufficient and the bonus is I no longer have to do the school run.  Yay!

What are you most looking forward to when restrictions are lifted?

Like everyone, I think, I’m looking forward to having the freedom of choice restored. I want to be able to make my own decisions over whether I meet someone face-to-face for a coffee or stay on Zoom. I really do not mind using Zoom, but I just wish to have the choice again.

What is your biggest goal this year?

I now run two businesses: Visually Explained and 5554 Virtual Expos. My biggest goal is to keep both businesses running smoothly, serving customers and making profit.

Personally, I wish to take at least one full week off work, to leave my laptop behind and go somewhere either in this country or abroad if that is possible. Where I go is not so important, taking the time off is the goal.

What has the past year taught you and how has it shaped your future for the better?

I think the biggest lesson was to be kind to myself and also to take breaks from work and allow myself the space to carry over tasks from one day to another.

The first 5554 Virtual Expo takes place this Thursday 25th February. To find out more click here.
