A Christmas message from Anita Jaynes, Founder of The Business Exchange.
2022 has been an exceptional year both at home and on a world stage and The Business Exchange has been at the forefront of local reaction as events have unfolded.
In February, almost overnight, the outbreak of war in Ukraine had a significant impact on the UK and worldwide economy – as well as our minds and hearts. Our planned feature for the April/May issue was ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance and I didn’t know how relevant the topic would be when I came to put the magazine together.
Our April/May front cover featured a landscape scene of the countryside between Tilshead and Lavington. A sea of yellow rapeseed with a deep blue sky – a subtle nod of support to our friends in Ukraine, as well as the importance of nature. In this edition we gifted advertising space to the Hope and Homes for Children Ukraine Appeal and regular contributor, John Davies, delivered a poignant message about the crisis in his Is it me? column.
As I write this, the situation in Ukraine hasn’t got any better with overnight strikes hitting the country’s capital, Kyiv.
Throughout the spring and summer months there seemed to be a real sense of getting back to it post-Covid with the community desperate to connect and rekindle relationships. We saw numbers return to pre-pandemic figures at our Big Breakfast events and The Business Exchange South West Charity Conference and Expo in May broke previous records with over 600 sign ups and 50 exhibitors.
As we had just started to get back to it after the summer holidays, the news broke that our beloved Queen had passed away. We became a nation in mourning and I gathered tributes from our local business community on what her Majesty the Queen meant to its members and the impact she had on many of your lives.
As I write this, I can’t quite believe what a year it has been but despite it all, our Swindon and Wiltshire business community has continued to push on, survive and thrive. I continue to be so proud to be part of this community.
Thank you to everyone who has supported The Business Exchange this year, we’ll be back in 2023 for our 10th year in business!
