Green Labyrinth celebrates successes of 2013

By Anita Jaynes on 9 December, 2013

Green Labyrinth, the training division of Green Inc (EU) Limited, is a community and work based training specialist providing a range of programmes and support to young people and employers in Swindon, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The organisation has grown over the last 18 months through a real partnership approach – working closely in supported housing, charity, volunteer, social enterprise and education sectors, as well as  Councils and Youth Engagement teams across the region.

Green Labyrinth’s approach is proving successful in helping many young people, who have been facing difficult circumstances, and who were not currently in Education, Training or Employment, to progress onto a suitable programme of vocational learning and onto apprenticeships or work experience.

Green Labyrinth programmes include the Youth Contract, Study Programmes, Traineeships, and Apprenticeships.

Green Labyrinth and Campbell Page together offer the Swindon Youth Contract for 16-17 year olds, which is a mentoring and engagement programme to help disadvantaged young people begin a pathway to employment or learning.  This programme began in May 2013 and several young learners have already successfully progressed onto Study Programmes or College courses.

Green Labyrinth’s FLOW Programmes for 16-18s (previously Foundation Learning and now  Study Programmes) have been running since 2012, offering:

  • Vocational qualifications
  • Work experience
  • Employability and other relevant life skills
  • Maths and English

These programmes aim to prepare young people for employment via work/voluntary placements and apprenticeships, or further studies. Many have progressed from last year’s programmes into work experience and apprenticeships, in the region. For example in Cirencester over two thirds of the class have moved forward into work experience and apprenticeships in local restaurants, a large retailers and other small businesses, with some moving onto college courses.

Green Labyrinth also offers Traineeships, a new programme providing work experience and other key skills for young people 16-24.

Longwater ATA (Apprenticeship Training Agency) in partnership with Green Labyrinth, offers a new approach to apprenticeships to support to the needs of small to medium employers.   This is a community interest company, operating as the employer of apprentices, and placing them into one or more “host employers” roles for their apprenticeship programme.

Longwater ATA interviews young people who complete Study Programmes, and others they have contacted, who may feel they are work ready.  Longwater ATA began in summer, and already has apprentices working in Hospitality, Health and Social Care, Business Administration and IT positions.

Longwater ATA is working with Skills for Care, the sector skills council, to support a new apprenticeship recruitment programme for the Care Sector across Swindon and Wiltshire, to encourage Care employers to employ younger staff where they may not have considered apprenticeships before.
