A recent survey for the third quarter of 2014 has shown that Chippenham has one of the lowest empty retail units in the UK.
Colliers International, a leader in commercial property services latest research shows high streets have weathered the worst of the downturn and Chippenham’s economy is recovering particularly well, with a 5.2 per cent shop vacancy rate, down from eight per cent last year. The survey found that Chippenham was the only location outside of London with single figure percentages.
Recent months have brought Butler’s Butchers and several cafes and food outlets including Rivo Lounge, Burger King and Pizza Hut Delivery, Los Amigos and Sarah-Jayne’s Cafe. Further retail outlets are on their way too with The Range, Next and TK Maxx investing in the area.
President of Chippenham Chamber of Commerce Chris Bonsor welcomed the “very encouraging” results. Mr Bonsor said national shops were attracted, but could not be accommodated in the centre “There aren’t any large retail spaces to appeal to national operators, which is why we’re seeing Next, TK Maxx and The Range investing in the outskirts of the town. I think the way forward is to concentrate on local, independent retailers in the centre.”
