Chippenham BID Business Awards – meet the 2018 winners

By Nick Batten on 4 December, 2018

As the 2019 Chippenham BID Business Awards approach, we’ve been speaking to some of 2018’s winners to see if they have any advice for this year’s entrants. Last week we heard from City Dressing. This week we meet…

Huw Thomas Commercial – Small Business of the Year 2018

Huw Thomas Commercial was established in Chippenham in October 2013. Having worked for over 25 years for small and large partnerships and then a large American owned property consultancy, the opportunity arose for the company owner, Huw Thomas, to begin his own niche commercial property consultancy.

The business provides advice on a range of commercial property matters including, sales, lettings, valuations, rent review, lease renewals, business rates appeals, development advice and investment advice.

The nature of clients ranges from private individuals to Pension Funds to major property companies and investors such as Standard Life Investments Ltd.

According to Huw,  Chippenham was the “natural choice” location to establish the firm.

In addition to running the business, Huw remains active in the Chippenham community as an executive member of Chippenham Chamber of Commerce and as a Trustee of Chippenham Borough Lands Charity.

How did it feel to win on the night?

I was surprised and delighted! It was a bit of a last minute decision to submit my entry so I thought the judges may be looking for more information than I had provided. Something obviously impressed them and against strong competition, I was really pleased to be announced the winner.

Did you receive any publicity for taking part?

The BID and event sponsors were excellent at promoting the event beforehand and then after the award evening highlighting all the winners individually and collectively. It also gave me the opportunity to have the “Winner”  logo printed on my business cards!

What tips would you give anyone entering for the first time this year?

Don’t be afraid to enter!  As I said above, it was a last minute decision as I thought there would be better businesses than me entering. Believe in yourself and your business. The chances are you are better than you give yourself credit for!
