Construction projects and the people behind them have been recognised at a special event organised by Swindon Borough Council’s Building Control team.

The Swindon Building Control Local Building Excellence Awards took place last month at the Civic Offices in Euclid Street and celebrated the best in technical innovation, sustainability, safety and design.

Swindon Mayor, Councillor Abdul Amin, presented awards to 13 winners, while a further five building projects were highly commended.

Local builders R and R Design and Build Contractors Ltd scooped two awards in the Best Small-Sized Extension and Best New Dwelling categories.

Construction company Willmott Dixon – along with architectural practice Quattro Design Architects – won Best Social Housing Development for the first phase of the Queens Drive regeneration project, while John Sisk and Son Ltd picked up the award for the Best Public or Community Building for its work on the new Radiotherapy Unit at Great Western Hospital.

There were awards too for Skanska Construction UK Ltd for its work on the new Zurich headquarters, Unity Place, in the town centre and Best Non-Residential New Build went to Integrated Health Projects by Vinci Construction.

Cotswold Woodwork and Restoration Ltd (Best Medium-Sized Extension), Porte Construction (Best Large Sized Extension) and Marcel Ausset Building Construction and Renovations Ltd (Best Conversion or Alteration to Existing Home) were also all recognised.

Best New Housing Development went to Newland Homes Ltd for its Skylark Meadows development in Blunsdon and UC Build was also successful in the Best Non-Residential Extension or Alteration for its work at the Iceland Distribution Centre.

Individual awards went to Michael Kord, of Hills Homes Developments (Best Residential Site Manager) and Nick Floyd, IBMC Ltd Building Contractors (Best Non Residential Site Manager).

The winners will each automatically go through to the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Regional Building Excellence awards for the West of England region in the spring.

Councillor Gary Sumner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Infrastructure, Transport and Planning, said, “I’d like to pass on my congratulations to all our winners and those who were highly commended for their work in delivering outstanding construction projects throughout Swindon.

“There was fierce competition this year and the quality of entries continues to improve year on year. I know all our winners will do Swindon proud in the regional finals and I’d like to wish them all the best of luck.”
