Bluebird Care Swindon serves up grant for older people’s afternoon teas

A Swindon community organisation is celebrating over a cup of tea after successfully applying for a new grant.

The £250 grant has been awarded to Eastcott Community Organisation by care at home provider Bluebird Care Swindon, and will be used to continue with the successful fortnightly afternoon teas it puts on for older people living the Eastcott area.

Bluebird Care Swindon had invited applications for its first grant, and was looking for community projects which make a positive difference to people’s lives, particularly older members of society.

The grant is part of Bluebird Care’s commitment to supporting organisations which themselves support older people. The company has already run two public events, bringing together groups supporting older people, so they can showcase their services.

“We had a number of applicants, all of which are doing great things to help older people in the Swindon area,” said Ben Curtis, Bluebird Swindon’s managing director. “I asked our staff to choose, and they selected Eastcott Community Organisation because the teas are such a great way of bringing people together, and they needefunding to help continue the good work they already do in our strong community.”

Eastcott Community Organisation is a registered charity which manages Savernake Street Social Hall, where the teas are held. The hall is managed by a board of trustees and volunteers.

Caroline Davies-Khan, Chair of Eastcott Community Organisation, said that over the years, funds had been provided by Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation and the Allen Lane Trust, but these were now depleted and the £250 would enable the teas to continue.

She said: “We are a small local charity, and we’re all volunteers, so a sum like £250 will go a long way and make a big difference. Often at the teas we have speakers – in March and April we’ll have talks on local history and Korean culture – so this will help towards the costs.”
