AM to PM with Goughs’ Jonathan Carter-Lewis

By Ben Carey on 26 August, 2022

AM to PM gives you a glimpse at the daily routine of some of our business community’s top professionals.

Jonathan Carter-Lewis is a Senior Associate at Goughs, helping to provide a wide range of legal services for individuals and businesses.

From listening to the Today programme to dreaming of being a professional bass player, he gives us a glimpse inside his daily life, including his role at one of Wiltshire’s longest established and leading law firms.

What time does your alarm go off?

My wonderful two-and-a-half-year-old daughter is my alarm clock.  In the rare event she has a “lie in”, I have a back-up alarm of 7am.

What’s the first thing you do?

Aside from getting my daughter ready for nursery, I usually listen to the Today programme to stay informed, or a Podcast (The Rest is Politics is a current favourite).

What do you do during your lunch break?

When time allows, I like to stretch my legs and go for a brisk walk to provide some perspective for the rest of the day.

What do you love most about your job?

Helping clients realise their goals, whether that’s expanding their business (through a new acquisition); exiting at the right time for them (possibly at retirement); or getting their “house in order” (for example, a share restructure) so they are ready for the next stage in their development.

What’s the worst part of the job?

Completing timesheets!

What executive tool/gadget could you not live without?

My watch. It’s more a 17th than a 21st century gadget, but it’s still invaluable.

What do you do after work?

Nursery pick-up and/or rehearsal with my cover band, Love Volcano.

If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?

Having recently joined Goughs and moved back west to my roots after a legal career in London, I feel I have already made a big (although very rewarding) change in direction, but that is still probably part of my Plan A.

Plan B (in another universe): a bassist in a prog-rock band!
