An Alzheimer’s charity in Wiltshire has won a prestigious national care sector award.

The Alzheimer’s Support Day Care Team were named winner of the Dementia Care Award at this year’s Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards.

The team, which consists of four clubs in Trowbridge, Devizes, Warminster and Salisbury, supports people living with dementia and family carers across Wiltshire.

The Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards recognise individuals and organisations that bring about significant impact in their communities within the not-for-profit sector, celebrating hard work, dedication, innovation and excellence.

The accolade was given to the Alzheimer’s Support Day Care Team for their commitment to providing group activities in an informal, loving atmosphere. Judges applauded the genuine friendship between members, colleagues and volunteers, and the atmosphere the teams create. Although the teams are highly experienced in dementia care, judges praised how they do not dwell on the condition, other than as part of the fuller understanding of the individual’s preferences, character and background.

Sarah Marriott, CEO at Alzheimer’s Support, said, “We’re incredibly proud to win the Dementia Care Award and to have had the opportunity to be among so many inspiring individuals and groups who make up the not-for-profit care sector.

“The hard-working and inspirational teams that run our day clubs in Wiltshire are very much deserving of this recognition. They bring much-needed respite to their communities, serving not only those with dementia but the families who are often struggling to cope. I am very proud to be part of this wonderful team.”

Neil Galjaard, Divisional Managing Director at Markel, added, “Every year, we are inspired by the incredible stories of how people and organisations across the UK make a real difference in people’s lives – and Alzheimer’s Support is a shining example of doing just that.

“It’s been a challenging time for anyone working in the not-for-profit sector, which is why these awards are so important in raising awareness and providing recognition of the tireless efforts and outstanding service of those who make up the care sector. It’s so important to share their stories and the difference they make each and every day to the lives of others, and the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards gives us the opportunity to do just that.

“Congratulations Alzheimer’s Support and to all of the winners and finalists for their exceptional work, and thank you for the lasting impact you have on those you care for – it is truly inspiring.”
