A female duo from Malmesbury is celebrating two years of trading following their successful acquisition of Abbey Communication in 2013.
The company has a twenty year history of providing specialist business language training to foreign business people and boasts an impressive client portfolio including Siemens, Mitsubishi, Glaxo Smith Kline and Japanese shipping company NYK.
Owners Alex Morgan and Sarah Voller were both trainers at Abbey Communication, before its founders retired. Sarah said: “Alex and I had worked together for three years prior to going into business together and we knew our skill sets complemented one another.
“I have a background in languages and worked in Spain for five years, post graduation, firstly in retail and then in freight management. I’m a trained teacher and I have a Master’s in responsible tourism management.
“Alex’s career history is complementary having worked as an HR manager. Alex also manages True North, a management development consultancy. She has a certificate in International Business English Training and a Master’s in Management, which concentrated on intercultural awareness and international management. ”
Abbey Communication works closely with its sister brand True North. Stylistically the ethos of the firms is the same. They focus not on the theoretical, but the practical. This stems from knowing what HR managers want and seeing the benefit of focusing both on communication and cultural understanding. The training is more than just language training.
The Abbey Communication English course fully immerses foreign professionals into English life, culture and language. Abbey has local host families in Malmesbury and students spend between one and six weeks embracing life in England, giving them the language they need for both business and social situations.
Alex said: “Our training focuses on what our students need to conduct their day-to-day English business, the packages are bespoke and are tailor made to match the client’s practical needs. Our trainers are highly professional and are totally understanding of the business world. Our students learn how to chair a meeting, deliver a presentation, run a negotiation and participate in a conference call during their stay with us.”
Alex and Sarah have recently launched new products into the marketplace, such as their ‘Conversation and Culture Immersion Days’. These intensive courses are aimed at immediately building the participant’s cultural awareness, foreign language confidence and speaking ability. They offer courses in Spanish, German, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese and English. Prices start at £125 + VAT and further information can be found via their website.
They have also launched a two-day ‘International Communication’ training programme, which focuses on cultural understanding within and between teams and companies, and is aimed at people who work in, or manage, international teams.
