Feeling cramped in your home? You’re not alone. According to a recent survey, 1 in 5 British households live in cramped conditions and need more storage space. It’s even more frustrating when you’ve got an empty corner that would make the perfect furniture spot.

Those awkward nooks and tricky corners may feel like wasted potential, but you’ll be relieved to hear that transforming them into functional spaces isn’t as hard as you might think. With a little creativity and clever design, you can maximise every inch of your home and add some special interest.

Corner Kitchen Cabinets

Corners in kitchens are notorious culprits for wasted space. Traditional cabinets with deep shelves leave a frustratingly inaccessible area in the back and piling up your utensils just ends up making a jumbled mess.

Consider replacing these with innovative corner units that utilise a revolving carousel or pull-out drawers. These solutions allow you to reach everything effortlessly, optimising storage capacity and preventing those forgotten tins of chickpeas from languishing in the back for years.

Embrace the Bay Window

Bay windows are a beautiful architectural feature, but their unique shape can present a challenge when it comes to furniture placement. Don’t let them become wasted real estate! Think outside the box – why not add a custom-built bay window seat with built-in storage underneath? This creates a cosy reading nook or a bright workspace, while simultaneously providing much-needed storage solutions.

It’s also a great way to add more seating to a room where you like to entertain guests, just be sure to keep it stocked up with cushions and blankets.

Use Vertical Space

Look up! Our walls offer plenty of ways to keep our homes organised, especially in smaller properties. You could add some style by installing a corner library with floating shelves and cabinets and store anything from novels and cookbooks to toys and decorative items.

Vertical storage keeps things off the floor, creating a more spacious and airy feel that is less prone to clutter. This strategy also works in laundry rooms, home offices and kitchens.

Add a Nook Under the Stairs

The space beneath the stairs is often neglected, but it holds immense potential. Depending on the size and layout, you could transform it into a variety of functional areas.

For smaller spaces, consider a built-in desk with shelving above – perfect for a hidden home office or a homework station for the kids. Larger under-stair nooks could accommodate a bed or your very own wine cellar. For something a little edgier and rustic, hang a hammock swing next to some wall shelves for a private relaxation zone.
