A one day working diary from rise and shine to lights out.
Every Tuesday we delve into the day-to-day diary of a member of the local business community. This week we put the spotlight on Martin Dugan.
Martin is Head of Operations for VHO, a business-to-business technology telemarketing firm and its sister company The Business Generation Group, a more general telemarketing company. Both are based in Milton Road, Swindon.
What time does your alarm go off?
06:30. And just in case; 06.45 & 06.50. I currently have the rather cliché but pleasant Peer Gynt’s Opus 23 to start. The 6.50 alarm is Guns ‘n’ Roses ‘Paradise City’.
What’s the first thing you do?
Open blinds, stretch, then breakfast… Unless I’ve just been listening to GNR then it’s a quick dash to get ready.
What do you do for lunch?
I like to go for a short wander to stretch my legs, get some fresh air and then eat with the team in the break room.
What do you love most about your job?
The variety and phenomenal potential of VHO/ TBGGroup is so exciting and the immediate ability to make big changes that help staff, clients and stakeholders.
What’s the worst part of the job?
The sheer amount of opportunities available is superb, and I’m constantly thinking of how to leverage more however with that comes the occasional difficulty of shutting off when work is done. I’m never bored though!
What executive tool/ gadget could you not live without?
Like most, my phone is imperative to keeping on top of everything. However, not exactly an executive tool, but my FitBit is a constant reminder to keep moving forward, physically and professionally.
What do you do after work?
I’m playing football, climbing, golfing (unashamed fair-weather golfer), learning a new solo on the guitar, going for meals or shutting the door, and completely zoning out with a book.
If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?
I’d run an outdoor extreme adventure company. Think camping on the side of a cliff or white-water pack rafting.
