AM to PM with Chris Dawes

By Anita Jaynes on 1 November, 2016

A one day working diary from rise and shine to lights out.

Every Tuesday we delve into the day-to-day diary of a member of the local business community. This week we put the spotlight on Chris Dawes of Chris Dawes Comms and Open Dawes Training.

Based in Swindon, Chris is a sports commentator and is regularly heard commentating at motor racing circuits around Europe. He also presents on the television and radio and hosts awards nights and events.

Chris is passionate about helping others become confident public speakers and offers media and presentation training to help business people portray the best image of themselves.

What time does your alarm go off?

7am during the week, potentially earlier on the weekend; depending on where I am commentating.

What’s the first thing you do?

Check emails, social feeds, news and sport. Getting back up to speed wakes me up. On the weekend, I either leap out of bed to the shower if I am driving to a circuit, or open up the motorhome curtains and smile at being in a race paddock if I’m already there.

What do you do for lunch?

Often I record voice over work.  Weekend’s we are either still on the mic or we catch up on news and gossip from drivers/teams in the garages/paddock.

What do you love most about your job?

I’m privileged to do the things I do!  Getting paid to talk about my sport, hosting awards nights/racing schools/lifestyle events etc, presenting on TV/Radio/Internet feeds, voice over and above all empowering others to have the confidence and skills to speak up in front of others and realise it can open all sorts of doors (hence Open Dawes Training).

What’s the worst part of the job?

Absolutely none of it!

What executive tool/ gadget could you not live without?

My tablet.

What do you do after work?

I spend time with my young daughter until she goes to bed, then collapse with my wife in front of the TV for an hour or so (although she will tell you I will still be working/researching on my tablet… a scurrilous accusation…)

If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?

Impossible to say, because I currently get to do plans A through to E already with the different activities or services I provide (commentating, presenting, training, voice over, hosting/MC)
