International Women’s Day 2021: Ramona Derbyshire

By Ben Carey on 8 March, 2021

The Business Exchange is proud to support the 2021 International Women’s Day #ChooseToChallenge campaign. This year we’ve reached out to the women in our community to hear their experiences of being a woman in business, discover why International Women’s Day is important to them and find out what they #ChooseToChallenge.

Ramona Derbyshire, Partner and Head of Thrings’ Business Growth Hub

I #ChooseToChallenge everyone to take a day just for themselves.

Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

It’s about solidarity and sisterhood, it reminds us we aren’t alone and that we’re doing a good job!

What do we still need to do for gender equality?

Create a more equal playing field to get women to the tops of their chosen careers  (if they want it) and seize the power of the boardroom. Why are the top jobs still man-heavy and how can we create a better balance for those women wanting a family?

What did you want to be when you were young? Have you ended up doing what you always wanted to? Has being a woman held you back?

A businesswoman with a nice suit, shoulder pads, a briefcase and a pair of killer heels in which to strut the halls of power. Did I make it? I fell into law, made partner at 30 and now find solutions for business clients who are more than happy to have a female lawyer. It’s about who can do the best job, right?

What is your advice to your younger self and what are your tips to nurture the strong independent girls of the future?

Work hard, focus and don’t sweat the small stuff. Smile even when it’s tough and remember the swan.
