A one day working diary, from rise and shine to lights out.
Every Tuesday we delve into the day-to-day diary of a member of the local business community. This week we put the spotlight on Matt Greenwood, founder of the recently launched Desk Cowork, based in Old Town, Swindon.
Desk Cowork is Swindon’s first co-working hub, allowing entrepreneurs and freelancers to have a professional registered address, high-speed internet, access to mentors, guest entrepreneurs and its community at an affordable price with membership packages starting from just £20 a month.
What time does your alarm go off?
5.30am on a good day to head to the gym. I was never a morning person, until three months ago I realised working out in the morning really energised the rest of my day and made me a more productive person. Recommended!
What’s the first thing you do?
Straight in with an espresso, peanut butter and rice cakes, then out to the gym. When I get into Desk the first thing I do is make sure we have enough coffee for all of our members – this is key!
What do you do for lunch?
In Old Town I’m spoilt for choice to eat lunch and may sometimes grab a bite to eat with a member. Although, anyone who knows me knows I love to cook and make a mean home-made chilli con carne!
What do you love most about your job?
Being able to support startups and be immersed with other exciting, ambitious people all day long. Desk is a community of go-getters and it’s so much fun. The other day a member in PR, an ecology firm’s MD and I were planning to build a prototype robot in the cowork space – the people here are so entrepreneurial.
What’s the worst part of the job?
It can be heartbreaking meeting people who don’t believe in themselves to take the leap into their start-up from the job they dislike. But that’s what we’re here for.
What executive tool/ gadget could you not live without?
Boring answer, but my iPhone is absolutely key. I hate being tied to one location, so my iPhone really allows me to work from anywhere in the world and has everything I need.
What do you do after work?
Honestly, I enjoy working so much that if I’m not having a drink with some friends, I continue working. I prefer to then make some really cool travel plans rather than be a potato in front of the TV every night. Right now I’m in Kuala Lumpur actually!
If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?
Changing direction would not be a problem, as it would only be to another start-up – I love learning about new industries and love tech startups. Working in a cowork space leaves you with unlimited plan Bs and knowledge!
