A one day working diary, from rise and shine to lights out.
New for 2016, every Tuesday we delve into the day-to-day diary of a member of the local business community. This week we put the spotlight on Martin Spiller, chairman of Systemagic and non-executive director for a number of high growth SMEs across the UK.
Systemagic is a professional IT support business working with clients across Wiltshire and the South West.
What time does your alarm go off?
Definitely a night owl by preference but my alarm goes off at 6:00 am and then I snooze it a couple of times before getting out of bed at 6.30 am, albeit it is a bit of a struggle until I’ve had my first two coffees.
What’s the first thing you do?
Make coffee (I have an unhealthy attachment to my Nespresso machine) and then check my emails, catch up on social media and check out the news before planning what I am going to for the rest of the day.
What do you do for lunch?
Depends where I am. I work from a lot of different locations and am single (I know it’s a hard life) I tend to just pick up a sandwich on the run. I am trying to eat more healthily in 2016 so my aim from February onwards is to make my own lunch…watch this space!
What do you love most about your job?
The variety and working with ambitious young entrepreneurs. Working with James the MD of Systemagic and the fantastic team is great fun as I am not a techie in anyway shape or form and love their passion and enthusiasm for their work and their clients. It’s very infectious and keeps me on my toes.
What’s the worst part of the job?
I love what I do, so I guess the only issue I have is recognising that I am not involved day to day. Sometimes it’s tempting to want to get my hands dirty but there is no way the guys at Systemagic are letting me anywhere near anything technical.
What executive tool/ gadget could you not live without?
My Nespresso machine!
What do you do after work?
I tend to have a lot of business events or dinners to attend as I am a member of a number of groups such as The Supper Club and Digital Doughnut (to name but a couple) as it’s a way to combine business, interesting company and getting fed (remember I’m single). If I’m not doing anything then I tend to either hit the gym or go out running or cycling depending on the weather (I don’t like getting wet).
If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?
I had planned to be a catwalk model but as that definitely isn’t an option I think I am in the right place. So I guess I’ll stick to Plan A as there isn’t a Plan B…. not with my face anyway!
