During COVID lockdown we’re reviving our AM to PM feature which delves into the lives and day-to-day diaries of members of our local business community. It’s great to be nosy and find out how others are coping, structuring their days and getting through these tricky times.
In this post we put the spotlight on the Founder and Director of Naturally Social, Natalie Sherman.
Natalie is 35 and started her business in July 2015. What began as a social consultancy has grown and expanded into a full-service communications agency, specialising in social media. Naturally Social offers both strategic and tactical delivery of most marketing and communications functions.
In 2017 Natalie was on the ‘Small Biz 100’ list, in 2018 she was named as one of South West Business Insider’s ‘42 under 42’ entrepreneurs to watch and last year she was named the UK’s No.1 Marketing Adviser by Enterprise Nation.
What time does your alarm go off?
Anytime between 7 and 7.30am.
What’s the first thing you do?
Check my social media notifications! Then at 8:30 I spend an hour working ‘on’ the business. I love that magic hour before anyone else arrives or logs on. It’s a bit of ‘me’ time at work.
What do you do for lunch?
When I’m in the office I don’t really do lunch but since working from home I’ve been stepping away for at least 30 minutes. I want to bring back the Friday pub lunch with the team though once we’re all back together!
What do you love most about your job?
Making a difference! I’ve got posters dotted around the office that remind the team to ‘Focus on Impact’. Likes and reach is all vanity really, without meaningful outcomes.
What’s the worst part of the job?
The (self-inflicted!) stress! I’m five years into my business journey and I’m very much a woman on a mission. I’m getting better at working smarter not harder though.
What executive tool/ gadget could you not live without?
Microsoft Teams, without a doubt. I also use Trello and Toggi. Trello helps me to track tasks assigned to the team and myself – to save me forgetting, constantly asking or sending lots of emails. I started getting religious with Toggl (time tracking software) at the end of last year to track the time we were spending on clients as well as Naturally Social. Mainly to help me make some key business decisions around resources and time management.
What have you been doing differently during lockdown?
I usually live stream once or twice a month on my Facebook page but as soon as we recognised the impact that COVID-19 would have and restrictions started to come into force, I’ve been ‘going live’ 2 / 3 times a week. I focus on providing support, advice and training to the business community in a number of ways.
What’s your current focus?
My main focus at the moment is to support and upskill the team and maintain good client relationships. We’re coming out of this fighting and raring to go. We want to work with more purpose driven companies and organisations who lack a communications function or a social media specialist in their teams.
We’ve produced our first E-Book too and have a brand-new website to promote: www.naturallysocial.co.uk

What do you do after work?
I’m not really a morning person as much as I try to be, so I tend to do a lot of work in the evenings. It’s a good time for me to get through my emails before switching off with a glass of wine and have a cuddle with my cats.
If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?
To scale back and focus on online learning. It’s an easy option but right now that’s all it is.
