AM to PM in lockdown with Karl Paul

By Anita Jaynes on 24 April, 2020

During COVID lockdown we’re reviving our AM to PM feature which delves into the lives and day-to-day diaries of members of our local business community. It’s great to be nosy and find out how others are coping, structuring their days and getting through these tricky times.

In this post we put the spotlight on Karl Paul.

Karl is the Founder of Swindon-based SEO and digital marketing agency, Smarter Media. He was recently named in the 2019 Insider Media 42 under 42 list. Karl lives with his wife Charlotte and his three daughters, Erin (8), Libby (7) and Cora (5).

This year Karl launched ‘Oscar’s 10 for 10‘, a series of 10 fundraising challenges to boost funds for Ronald McDonald House in Bristol in memory of his son, Oscar, who died prematurely in 2010. So far, £3686 has been raised against the £10k target.

6:30am Alarm goes off– Although I’m quite often already awake as one of my children will wake me 🙂

6:30 – 7am – Watch the news. I like to start the day knowing what’s going on.

7am – 7:30am Shower and get ready.

7:30am – 8am Coffee and breakfast. I don’t seem to function too well until I’ve had a coffee.

8am – I’d usually head to the office but now I find myself simply wandering through the kitchen into my office at home.

8am – 9:30am Working on key tasks for the day.

9:30am – 10am – Catch up call with Robert our Ops Director and Martin our Finance Director.

10am – 12pm – Finishing my most important tasks for the day. I like to get on and get these done first so that I know I have completed what needs to be done each day.

12pm – 1pm – With lockdown, I’m now having lunch with Charlotte and the girls every day. Silver lining and all that. With the weather being nice it is great to have time to see them playing in the garden and to help out with a little bit of homeschooling. Hats off to all the teachers, they have a tough job!

1pm – 3:30pm – Back in the office and on calls/video calls. Catching up with the team on tasks that are being completed, projects being worked on and ensuring our clients are all ok. I also use this time to respond to emails.

3:30pm – 5pm – Working on the big picture stuff, my big plans, the bits that will really move the needle. We recently launched our Pay Per Lead model and this is now scaling well. It is ideally suited to companies that can handle significant volumes of quality leads.

5pm – 6pm – Take the dog for a walk with Charlotte and the girls.

6pm – 7pm – Dinner with Charlotte and the family. Another benefit to being at home all the time at the moment.

7pm – 9pm – Back in the office. With some of the team on furlough, I am working an extra couple of hours a day to keep on top of things.

9pm – 10pm – Reading. I’m reading more books than ever now. Best one so far is ‘Mean Business’ by Al Dunlap. I high recommend it!
