Mooneerams Solicitors specialises in acting for the innocent victims of accidents who suffer serious injuries. Many of the clients for whom the firm handles personal injury claims get injured as a result of road traffic accidents: car accidents, motorcycle accidents, cycling accidents, horse riding accidents and pedestrian accidents.
In 2023, in Great Britain as a whole, 26,643 people were killed or seriously injured, a figure which included 1,645 fatalities.
Nearer to home, in 2022, in Wiltshire, 269 people were seriously injured or killed in road accidents, which was an increase of 17% on the previous year.
The following year, partly due to a summer road safety campaign carried out by Wiltshire Police, there were 25% fewer fatal accidents on the county’s roads.
This welcome reduction in the number of people who lost their lives in accidents on Wilshire’s roads was achieved by the Police targeting motorists committing one or more of the ‘Fatal Five’ traffic offences:
- Drink/drug driving
- Careless driving
- Driving at excess speed
- Driving without a seatbelt
- Using a mobile phone while driving
The campaign was given the title of Project Zero. Its ultimate aim is to bring down the rate of fatalities each year to zero.
Project Zero is still active in 2024, specifically targeting drivers falling foul of the Fatal Five offences and focusing on a different location in the county each week.
Campaigns like Project Zero play a crucial role in reducing the number of fatalities, alongside ongoing national campaigns, such as the road safety charity Brake’s annual Road Safety Week, which aims to educate road users on the need to drive more safely.
Acting for the next of kin of someone who has suffered fatal injuries in a road accident is undoubtedly one of the most harrowing types of claim that the solicitors at Mooneerams are asked to deal with.
Pursuing a claim for clients who are still grieving the loss of a loved one requires a mixture of empathy, professionalism, expertise and determination to ensure that the maximum compensation possible is recovered from the insurers of the road user whose negligence caused the accident.
Often, the person suffering the fatal injury was the breadwinner of the family and recovering a sum in compensation to reflect, amongst other items of loss, the ongoing financial impact the loss of their loved one will have on the family is the key aim of the solicitor who has conduct of the claim.
