The Techies – Meet the winners

By Nick Batten on 19 June, 2023

Now in its sixth year and open for entries, The Techies is a Business Exchange award scheme that celebrates Swindon and Wiltshire’s most exciting tech innovators.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be catching up with some of last year’s winners.

Today we hear from Dr. Andrew Dixon, MD of SVGC, a Berwick St Leonard-based company that has been providing digital transformation and digital design services to the public sector for 25 years.

Winning the ‘Using Tech to Transform Business’ category, SVGC’s entry focused on its work with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), designing and implementing its Digital Sensitivity Review.

How did it feel to win the Using Tech to Transform Business category at the Techies 2022?

We were thrilled. SVGC operates across the UK, but Wiltshire has been our home for over 20 years, so it feels great to be recognised in these regional awards. As a small business, we are delighted to have this opportunity to shine a light on the amazing things that go on in the South West!

Tell us more about what you do

SVGC supports the public sector to make great decisions. Through transformative advisory and digital design services we enable effective and efficient business process and decision making. In 2021 we launched SVGC Digital, our digital solutions and data science centre of excellence to bring innovative technologies and data-enabled decision-making to the public sector. Utilising our continually expanding base of digital expertise, we provide novel approaches and state-of-the-art technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning and bespoke solution development.

What have you been working on since winning?

We have continued to expand our digital solutions and are now working with FCDO, HM Treasury and the Home Office. We work with a range of partner companies and every day is different, and a new challenge. That’s what is great about being in a collaborative small business – the range of things we are able to get involved in.

What are your plans for the coming months?

The business is going through an exciting phase of expansion with lots of new recruits coming on board – a real success story. We have recently won some new contracts and extended our roles on some others. So, we are working hard to get the new opportunities embedded.

What would be your advice to anyone looking to enter the Techies?

Go for it! The application process is super easy, and you’re supported throughout. It’s great to get to talk with and meet other local organisations developing innovative tech in Wiltshire too

Have you made any new connections as a result of winning the award?

Not yet, but we made some great connections [at the awards ceremony] and have kept in touch. We thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the other nominees and winners and hearing about their innovations.

Are you using your award win in your marketing?

Yes, we were very active in the lead up to the awards on our LinkedIn profile and wrote several blogs promoting our finalist status and successful win. We also have the winner badge promoted on our website. You can keep up to date with our blogs and news stories here.

If The Business Exchange could help you share one message, what would it be?

That the world of data science and technology is exciting. It provides so many opportunities for growth as individuals, but also the bigger picture. With the right tools, expertise and programmes in place the public sector can benefit exponentially from embracing the developing digital landscape.
