The Techies – Meet the winners

By Nick Batten on 12 June, 2023

Now in its sixth year and open for entries, The Techies is a Business Exchange award scheme that celebrates Swindon and Wiltshire’s most exciting tech innovators.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be catching up with some of last year’s winners.

Today we hear from James Derrick, Risk and Compliance Officer for Blackmore Computers, an IT Services company based in Chitterne, near Warminster.

Winning a category that included Computer Network Defence and Cloud Heroes, Blackmore picked up the “Best tech security award” with an entry that focused on it achieving a UK first – becoming ADISA Standard 8.0 Certified at Distinction level.

How did it feel to win the Best Tech Security at the Techies 2022?

We were very proud of the recognition for our efforts in providing a top-tier solution, which stood out even amongst the other fantastic entrants. Blackmore achieving the highest possible level of certification against the ADISA standard for information security-focused IT asset disposal (ITAD), and indeed being the first worldwide in doing so, was the culmination of a strong team effort.

Tell us more about what you do

Blackmore is an information security-focused ITAD company based on Salisbury Plain. We collect and process redundant IT equipment on our clients’ behalf, assisting them in evidencing compliance with the UK data protection legislation as well as their environmental obligations surrounding waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

What have you been working on since winning?

Our focus has been on understanding the sustainability impact we deliver through ensuring that the maximum number of assets we handle are returned to function. Devices suitable for reuse are sold, potentially reducing the need for new equipment to be manufactured. Refurbished hardware can also be donated towards projects which tackle digital poverty.

What are your plans for the coming months?

To enhance our understanding of the sustainability aspect of our organization we are reaching out to our peers and new partners who will collaborate on research into embodied carbon within modern IT equipment, an area where the research available is currently lacking.

What would be your advice to anyone looking to enter the Techies?

The Techies is a great space to celebrate South West-based tech-focused businesses, and a fantastic opportunity to meet a really diverse group of people across the tech space. The evening was full of inspirational content and really showcased how organisations across the region are not just keeping up with the broader tech industry, but in many cases really pioneering and making waves!

Have you made any new connections as a result of winning the award?

Connections made on the night, as well as more broadly having the opportunity to share our story has been excellent for us. ITAD is amongst the least glamorous functions within tech, and is often overlooked, however the information security and environmental considerations which our industry exists to protect are worth bringing to the attention of security and sustainability advocates across the spectrum of technology businesses.

Are you using your award win in your marketing?

Yes, both in social media marketing as well as more traditional print media we have shared our win and how proud the team were even as entrants, let alone having taken home the trophy. The wonderful geometric bright copper trophy stands out in our reception area amongst our mini-museum collection of retro-tech devices which have passed through our facility over the years.

If The Business Exchange could help you share one message, what would it be?

We really want to change people’s perception of IT equipment, moving away from treating it as disposable, and used hardware being undesirable, to one where second user and beyond is mainstream just like the market for used cars. The environmental cost of manufacturing and importing new hardware, with all the processes, energy and rare materials involved is massive, where many could satisfy their technical requirements with a refurbished item and feel good about the positive sustainability whilst also saving money compared with new.
