Natural Stone Consulting is a family business that specialises in supplying exquisite stone flooring, tiles, and paving to residential and trade clients. They supply a wide variety of materials ranging from terracotta tiles to limestone flooring that suit the client’s needs, taking pride in offering bespoke flooring opportunities for both interior and exterior projects.

The business started in 2009 and works with both homeowners as well as architects, designers, and landscape designers. This week we caught up with Andy and Sam to talk over their journey and what the future holds for their business and their team.

What inspired you to create Natural Stone Consulting?

The recession of 2008/2009 meant many successful businesses working in stone had to scale back. Being employed by a family business in the industry myself, I (Andy) could see the struggles facing them. I decided to leave before potentially losing my job and began working with many hats on as an agent for factories and wholesalers. I had finally, at the age of 30, found an industry I loved being part of and wanted to stay in. I loved natural materials – stone in particular – and loved being involved in creating and developing different finishes and tile sizes. I also loved helping other companies to create or add stunning natural materials to their ranges for homeowners and trade customers to select from.

Sam joined the business in 2015 and since then it has developed into a company that now supplies directly to homeowners as well as designers, architects and landscape designers – enabling them choose the best stone flooring, paving or tiles for their project.

We use our knowledge, creativity and love for stone to source and create our own collections which include many exclusive materials that are timeless and add true value to any space in which they are placed.

What is the most challenging part about running Natural Stone Consulting?

We are a relatively small business and many challenges come with trying to compete with larger brands that have bigger budgets to cover their marketing, resources and stock availability. Despite this, we relish the challenge of becoming a go-to natural stone supplier for many more clients over the coming years.

There is also never enough time in the day to achieve everything we want to right now – we have so many plans and ideas but these need to be implemented with thought, strategy and clarity to ensure success. Ensuring we hold enough stock whilst still growing as a business can also be a juggle as is the continuous work of developing our small team of colleagues.

What are the future plans for Natural Stone? Where do you see the business in 5 years?

This question we find hard to answer – most importantly for us is that obviously we are still in business and we can retain most of our knowledgeable staff as we grow. We hope that the business has become more well-known for the quality of the materials we produce and source. We will also continue to offer an unrivalled choice of natural stones. We wish to remain affordable, knowledgeable and engaging while being trusted by homeowners and trade clients to supply their homes and projects with natural stone that delivers a true personal value to the environment it is placed. If we continue do all this well, Natural Stone Consulting will continue to grow and develop. To enjoy what we do is also very important to us all.

What’s the favourite part of your job?

I (Andy) really enjoy meeting the clients and finding about the creative vision for their project – how they really want it to look and feel once complete. Showing the homeowners and designers materials they had not thought of using before is also really rewarding – they may discover textures, formats and sizes of tile they did not know were possible. To then see these stones in images from their finished project is great.

I also really enjoy visiting the factories and artisans we work with to discover and create new finishes to materials I know our clients will love.
