AM to PM with Russell Poynter-Brown, On-Pole

By Ben Carey on 5 December, 2022

AM to PM gives you a glimpse at the daily routine of some of our business community’s top professionals.

Russell Poynter-Brown is the Founder of On-Pole – a specialist consultancy focused on developing and maintaining high performance. Working with senior management teams and key personnel, Russell blends extensive industry experience with best practice from the military and elite sports to create dynamic learning and developmental environments.

He gives us a snapshot into his life, from fountain pens and form filling to fast jets.

What time does your alarm go off?

6.00am – I use the time to review actions and plan my day without interruptions.

What’s the most important part of your morning routine?

Whenever I can, I either go to the gym or for a run/speed walk as it clears my head and boosts my energy levels for the day ahead.

What do you do for lunch?

I always eat something but most often at my desk.

What do you love most about your job?

The variety of clients and the ability to make a positive difference to individuals and their organisations. On-Pole places a premium on collaborative working and harnessing the power of collective endeavours to improve performance and so it’s very rewarding to see people and teams flourish.

What’s the worst part of the job?

Some of the (necessary) office management and administration tasks; I’m not an enthusiastic form-filler!

What gadget or app could you not live without?

Microsoft Teams or Zoom, as well as a good fountain pen – very ‘old school’ but I find writing with it helps me to avoid distractions!

What do you do after work?

I’m a bit of a ‘sponge’ and so enjoy reading books and academic articles about the psychology and physiology behind elite performance. I also enjoy learning from military strategy and best practice.

If you changed direction, what would be your Plan B?

RAF fast jet pilot or pre-hospital trauma specialist medic.
